French Fried

Lexi Disques : lesdisqueslexi.bandcamp.com

Born a french, fried in Belgium, Accou recently delivered on stage ecstatic dancefloor sets for the techno enthusiast.

Back to he intimacy of his studio, Antoine lets himself go to layered dreamy electronics with a warm loving feeling covered under six feet of snow. On the other side of the record, that noisy guitar sound coming straight out of the early nineties instantly catches the ear to an intense and joyful travel in time.

Lexi Disques is a maverick label based in Brussels since 2008 that explores the rich possibilities of the 7-inch record single. A welcoming home for experimental and adventurous musicians of diverse backgrounds, from fresh and vibrant faces to underground heroes, dwelling between the misty fields of psych-pop to the straight (and not so straight) roads of electronics.

Rhyme Nor Reason

Possible Motive : accou-music.bandcamp.com

There was a time when a person would pick up an instrument to compose yet another song for a loved one. A sad figure humming into a microphone, pronouncing the most basic words and forms to convey quantity, quality, fact, statistics and similar sounds describing pain, loss and sorrow. The human brain would perceive the melody sad and perhaps within herself feel a sense of melancholia.

In another parallel world a new composition would then appear. But not one composed on a wooden built instrument, no, sounds made into structures and tables that would assists the listener into providing an additional context and meaning through digital synthesis and quantised harmonies. But who could really tell if these sounds were real? Or where they just sounds impersonating an idea of something?

Rhyme nor reason is as abstract in its shapes and ideas as it is concrete and elegant in its narratives. A carefully crafted wooden cabinet with an over-whelming amount of different drawers and hidden compartments. Each box storing blissful arrangement; a fluorescent stone, a paper note saying something about lunch, some collectible objects, a forgotten token or perhaps an autograph, all so very vibrant and joyful for its possessor.

Deleted files stored on rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material. Small, easy to loose SSD memory cards of recorded corrupt files and digital artefacts. Software engineered compositions trying to grasp the shared belief of an upcoming future, vivid and uncertain; birds, waters and long lost recollections. A release unconcerned with the literal depiction of things from the visible world. At least not for now.

Stereo

Possible Motive : accou-music.bandcamp.com

“A banquet of sounds” indeed. Brussels-based artist Accou certainly drenches his atmospheres in vivid richness, the billowing ambience thick as fog banks on the brink of changing from a gas to a liquid state. Two tracks are long, one is short, and the blankets of sound manifest in physical form to obscure the vision. That’s OK – when you’re meditating you’re supposed to keep your eyes closed anyway.

That’s the point of Stereo, whose calming demeanor allows for easy slippage into a self-focused trance. In it you ponder the glacial tonal and timbral changes each track goes through, each glistening arc from sunrise to sunset and back, all in time lapse. And Accou even provides a glimpse into the workstation used – mixers, speakers, patch cords, tapes. What’s going on in there?

Stereo is what’s going on. Perfect for big headphones.

Serafine

Jj funhouse : jjfunnnhouse.bandcamp.com

JJ012 is a C-25 by Accou, a somewhat mysterious frenchman residing in Brussels with a history of hard-ware jams and spaced out synth-fog, but on ‘Serafine’, he only used his electronic brainmachine.

If you like those semi-hysteric moments in weird eighties b-movies, especially the party and artworld-scenery, then this one is for you. A tape filled with digital daydreams that turn your couch into some time-travelling vessel. Ikebana kitsch mixed with tribal flavors and ethereal voices from all corners of the galaxy: it’s all there. No wonder these sounds are made as a tribute for American sound-effects maestro and composer Frank Serafine, the genius behind the soundworld of blockbusters like Tron, Star Trek, Poltergeist and tons of other movies.
